Guys Weekend (by chris) September 24, 2013

So Melina would like me to recap our madcap boys weekend.  I’m not sure how much details I can give because she already covered a great deal  and then there is the cardinal rule of what happens in a guys weekend stays in a guys weekend but here it goes.

The drive there was pretty good.  As Melina mentioned we got stuck in Perth for awhile but on the bright side I managed to hit up a brewery aptly called Perth Brewery to sample some new beers.

Upon arrival we went for a little walk so Henry could blow of steam and run around.  The resort has a small farm so we saw some pheasant, roosters, turkey’s, and pigs.  Apparently, earlier in the year they have more animals but most were now gone to the abattoir by now.  After Melina was convinced the turkey’s were plotting to kill us we went and settled into the room.

Its a wonder we made it out alive

As mentioned in Melina’s post I spent a fair bit of the night on the floor with Henry.  I felt bad for him as I assumed he was thrown off by sleeping in a strange place.  We then hit up the breakfast buffet were I stuffed myself on eggs, bacon, sausage, and the best fried tomatoes I have ever had.  Melina was then off to the beauty salon.  I took the boys for a hike in the rain.  Or more like a ride through the woods.  Henry walked for about the first 300 metres and then insisted that he go on my shoulders for the remaining 2km.  Freddy was strapped to my chest sleeping peacefully for the entire hike.  Towards the end of the hike I noticed that Henry got really quiet and kept hitting my head with his chin.  I managed to crane my head around and see that he had actually fallen asleep on my shoulders.  We then headed back to the room and changed out of our wet clothes.  As it was still raining I threw on Muppets from Space for Henry while I decided to feed Freddy. Or attempt to feed him.  It turns out Freddy is a boob man and not interested in a bottle at all.  Despite this I managed to get him down for a nap and then I put Henry down and took the opportunity for a quick nap myself.

Melina then came back looking all dolled up and fed Freddy and then immediately had to take off to get dressed.  I then woke up Henry and got the three of us looking presentable and headed to the chapel.  It soon became evident that Freddy did not want to sit during the ceremony so I had to stand and rock him.  I was in the back row so this was not an issue but then Henry got jealous and wanted me to hold him too.  Luckily, one of Caitlin cousins volunteered to take Freddy.  He loves being held by others so he quickly calmed down.   As Melina said the ceremony was short and sweet.  Afterwards, the boys and I headed back to the room for some juice, beer, and to watch some college football.

We then hit up the reception.  It was nice but it was getting late by Freddy’s standards so instead of eating I walked the patio and hallways with Freddy to keep him calm as the speeches went on.  Meanwhile, Henry decided to abandon me.  He seduced some bridesmaid at the head table and spent all night there.  I was able to lure him back briefly with a cookie but once it was done he quickly abandoned me again.  So much for “bros before…”  Once the speeches were done Melina took Freddy and I got to eat my meal.  However, after about one bite Melina came over saying I had to hurry up because she needed my help to unzip her dress to feed Freddy back in the room.  So I scarfed it down in a matter of minutes and went back to the room.  There we got the boys ready for bed and Melina headed back out.   The boys and I were all set for some hell raising when. Melina texted me saying she wouldn’t stay out much longer.  So we again had to postpone a night of debauchery.  Maybe next weekend?

Henry slept in the next day making for a relaxing little morning before we hit up the breakfast buffet again.  I then loaded up the car and we headed home.  We took a small detour to Maple Dale cheese outside of Tweed and loaded up on a bunch of old cheddar.  They have free samples out and much to my surprise Henry liked all the samples even the smoked 4 yr old.  He walked around the store saying “more cheese please”.  We then had a nice little stop in Almonte to pick up Ginger and visit with my parents before we got home.

All in all it was a great weekend. Of course any weekend I get to spend quality time with my boys I count as a great one. The brewery and cheese stops along with the lovely wedding were the icing on the cake.

A Wonderful Wedding September 23, 2013

Filed under: Uncategorized — frombeantosprout @ 8:14 pm

This past weekend, I had the opportunity of being in my friends Caitlin and Brian’s wedding. What a great wedding it was. First off, I want to start by saying that Caitlin was probably the most easy going bride I’ve ever met. All of her bridesmaids have a lot going on right now in their lives, such as young children, moving to the states over the summer, completely renovating a home. Many brides would have freaked out about all this but Caitlin was super understanding. Several times in the past year I’ve told Chris “I feel like I’m not doing enough” and then I’d send Caitlin an email or text and she’s write back “no worries”. She just rocked it as a bride.

The wedding took place at the Viamede resort on Stony Lake near Peterborough. So this also marked the farthest we’ve ever traveled with Freddy. Chris took Friday off so we could take all day getting there, which is pretty much what happened. I remember telling Chris in the time we took to get there, we could have gone to Toronto and half way back if it had been just the two of us. We spent a good hour in Perth, stopping at the LCBO, then at Mcdonalds where I was hoping there would be a game room for Henry to go crazy in but alas there wasn’t. Not that he cared much, he was ecstatic to get a happy meal. He barely touched his fries and chicken nuggets though but devoured the yogurt that came with it and also was super happy about getting a full bottle of milk out of the deal. His toy was a batmobil but he was happier playing with the plastic spoon. Go figure. Freddy slept on and off throughout the entire trip but made himself quite vocal when he was awake. Poor guy got the raw end of the deal this weekend, spending a large part of it in his car seat or strapped to Chris or being delayed in feedings. When we got off highway 7 to get to the resort, the roads were crazy windy and I felt I was going to be sick. Chris kept asking me if I wanted him to slow down or pull over but by this point the kids were screaming so I told him “don’t stop, just drive until we get there”

We're on our way! Still smiling as we had been in the car for only an hour at this point.

I had to take a picture of this place. It's a chip truck that basically added an entire building to its back.

The resort itself was pretty neat. Picture the type of place like in Dirty Dancing. I imagine in the summer time it’s quite similar with organized activities etc. I had upgraded to a kind suite and I’m so happy we did. Our room was MASSIVE. We had a full size living room, a kitchen, a patio, then a seperate bedroom with a jacuzzi tub and a private patio. There was also a gas fireplace in the middle of the suite which you could see from both the room and the living room. Henry slept in the living room on a cot mattress on the floor and he seemed to enjoy his little setup. There was even a little nook where we were able to place Freddy and then used a blanket and duct tape to make his nook a little more private/quiet.

When we got to our room, Freddy was just rolling around ecstatic to be out of his seat.

When we got to our room, Freddy was just rolling around ecstatic to be out of his seat.

We had the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner on Friday night. I absolutely loved the decor that Caitlin and Brian did. There were mason jars everywhere filled with candles. Some were wrapped a bit in twine, others half painted. There were branches as accents and lovely bunting hanging from the ceiling. I felt like I had died and gone to Pinterest heaven. At this point I got to meet Caitlin and Brian’s family and they were just super nice and friendly. I had been a little worried that I wouldn’t know many people there and might be shy but they just welcomed us with open arms. The rehearsal dinner itself was delicious. They had a ceasar salad which I believe was sprinkled with crack. Caitlin and Brian gave us each a gift for being in their wedding party. I got this awesome necklace that has the first letter of my name cross stitched into it and a neat branch like coffee mug. There was a campfire that night where everyone was invited but Chris was back at the room with the kids already and I felt it might be a rough night in a new location so I opted to go to the room and get some sleep instead.

Freddy got to meet Eddie, my friend Katie's son. She was another of the bridesmaids in the wedding.

Freddy got to meet Eddie, my friend Katie’s son. She was another of the bridesmaids in the wedding.

That night, Henry woke up a few times, screaming for his daddy and running towards the front door looking for him. Chris ended up sleeping on the floor with him a few times. He’s a great dad that way. In fact, Chris took care of the boys the entire weekend while I was running around for the wedding. We’d have a system where if I could find 5-15 minutes I would run and feed Freddy however it was a boys weekend for sure. Chris is going to write a separate post about his weekend with the boys.

The next morning we were up early and happy that we had brought a loaf of bread and peanut butter for Henry. We then went for a second breakfast at 8:30 in the main dining hall. It was great, while we were piling food onto our plates, Brian’s mom Karen took Freddy and walked around with him. He just kind of lunged at her when she was walking by, pretty much physically screaming “Pick me up and hug me and love me!” Karen seemed happy to oblige. After breakfast, Jill, another bridesmaid, drove us all to get our hair and makeup done. Julie (Caitlin’s maid of honor and now sister in-law) found this great place about 30 minutes away and we were pampered for 2 hours or so.

Then it was wedding time! Rushed back to the room, fed Freddy and then ran over to Caitlin’s room and got dressed. It was raining like crazy. You should have seen us try and get to the chapel dry. We each had an umbrella in our hands, our bouquet and holding up part of Caitlin’s dress. We were successful though! I had asked Chris to take pictures of the wedding but most were blurry because he was dealing with Henry and bouncing Freddy. At one point, Caitlin’s cousin offered to hold Freddy during the ceremony so Chris could tend to Henry. I was so grateful for her gesture. Just another example of how awesome their families are. Caitlin and Brian had made these neat wedding wands for guests to wave. They became Henry’s new favourite toy for the rest of the weekend.

Luckily one of the non blurry ones was me walking down the aisle :-)

The ceremony was beautiful. We got to hear the story of how Brian proposed and the entire thing was mixed with humor and genuine emotion. It was short and sweet too. No readings or getting up and down. Just what mattered the most to both of them. I loved it! We then took a bunch of pictures with the photographer who you could tell just loved her job. She’d get super excited about a great shot. Her energy was infectious. We then had a quick cocktail hour (and Freddy as well) and then it was time for dinner. Again the food was amazing. And mom, if you’re reading, I ate asparagus! Two stalks of it! Yes, me! I know, crazy right? It was so good!

Chris and the boys were sitting at a separate table and Henry started complaining loudly about seeing me. I could hear him yelling “MAMA”, so to avoid him screaming this for the next hour or so, we let him sit with me at the head table. Again, many brides would have said “no effing way, I had a clear vision about this dinner” but Caitlin just said “sure, let him come”. It was cute watching Henry clap at the end of everyone’s speeches. Poor Chris wasn’t faring much better with Freddy though. He was just losing it. When the speeches were done, I went to relieve Chris so he could eat his meal and went back to the room with the boys to feed Freddy and put him down. Chris then came back and I went back to dinner to partake in the ice cream bar/buffet. I also got to watch the first dance and the father/daughter, mother/son dances. I had a quick drink then went back to check on Chris and the boys. Freddy was loosing it. His voice was all hoarse and he was very warm, he was getting sick and couldn’t calm down so I ended up staying in the room for the rest of the night. I felt terrible about missing the rest of the party, it sounded like it was such a good time.

The next morning we actually got to sleep in a little (I use that term loosely since Chris joined Henry on the floor at 5 and slept until 6:30 and Freddy was up from 3:30 to 5:00 but then slept until 7). We packed everything and went to enjoy a last breakfast before hitting the road.

Anyways, a bit of a longer post this time around, but I wanted to make sure I captured it all. Another highlight, while driving back, we filled up on gas at 115.9!!! Insane right!

A big congrats to Caitlin and Brian and their wonderful union. The only thing that could have made it better would have been the presence of a cat or two. 🙂

Class Is In Session September 17, 2013

Filed under: Uncategorized — frombeantosprout @ 8:12 pm

We are full into the fall swing of things and our weekly schedule is almost full despite me saying we were going to take things easy this time around. On Mondays, Henry, Freddy and I got to Making Music Meaningful classes, where Henry is completed in love with the teacher Nicole. As we get closer to the retirement home where the classes take place, he just starts repeating her name over and over again. It’s kind of cool also that a lot of the mom’s who were there when Henry was a baby, are back with a second child so it’s kind of like a class reunion.

Speaking of reunions, Freddy and I started up our Fitmom classes last Tuesday. I had forgotten how satisfying that class can be. Sue is just such an amazing trainer and personal motivator. I feel like I’m pretty much going to die at the end of each class but she never forces you to push it beyond your capabilities. She will push you, she can point out exactly when you start slacking off (even if you’re pretending to be working hard). I’m so glad I started doing these classes again. Today’s class was crazy hard, but in a good way. In just a week (and with a better bra) I’ve noticed a huge difference already. We do a warm up lap before the actual class starts and last week I power walked it, this week I jogged most of it. I feel at a better place physically then when I started last time with Henry. I kind of feel my endurance level is higher. Could be from running after a toddler all the time. Guess Henry helped build up my stamina. Every time I finish a class, my endorphin levels are so high, I feel like running 5km or hiking a tall peak. The other mom’s in the class are super inspiring as well. There’s one mom who’s there with her 2 month old and her preschool aged daughter who works out alongside us. She’s so adorable and well behaved. I couldn’t imagine Henry hanging around us working out when there’s a beach and water so close by. Anywho, I just feel good doing it, so Sue if you’re reading, thank you!

On Wednesdays, Freddy and I have started a Monkey Rock Music class at the Soloway Community Center. We’ve only done one class so far, but it is really fun.  Lots of boogieing and singing and clapping. Our instructor Jordan is pretty cool too. He seems very at ease with the chaos that ensues from babies climbing all over his guitar.

Thursdays, we usually try and go to the movies in the afternoon.

Fridays, it’s usually family visit day and shopping etc.

So yeah, pretty busy but I kind of like having this much structure.

Getting ready for a jog. Freddy loves jogging.

5 Months Old September 16, 2013

Filed under: Uncategorized — frombeantosprout @ 8:11 pm

Yesterday Freddy turned 5 months old. He’s such a sweet little guy despite the whole sleep thing. His nickname is Friendly Freddy for a reason. Even when he’s angry, he’s smiling.

He’s rolling around from front to back and back to front like crazy. He’s just constantly squirming around like he can’t stop moving.  If we put him down on his stomach, he likes to inch forward like a worm where he will use his head and legs to move.

Today he started sitting a bit on his own as well. He can only last 20-30 seconds but it’s a start. I love how much he loves life. Such a positive outlook.

So like I did with Henry, here’s a young Freddy:

Sleep Training Chronicles: Day 2 & 3 September 15, 2013

Filed under: Uncategorized — frombeantosprout @ 9:05 am

Sleep training is going slightly better… Freddy is no longer screaming for 90 minutes which is a good thing. The past two days I’ve not been good at starting his bedtime routine at 6pm. Friday we had a late dinner so I started his routine at 7 (yeah, late dinner for us is anything past 5:30) and yesterday we had dinner at my dad’s and only got home at 8pm so we were two hours behind schedule for Freddy.

Regardless of when he goes down, whether it be 6, 7 or 8, he wakes himself up at 11pm. On day 1 I had decided to feed him at that time, not so much for day 2 and 3. On Day 2, I went to him after he cried for 5 minutes and picked him up to calm him down. He then proceeded to try and latch on to any part of my body he could find. I calmed him down a bit and put him back down in his crib where he then screamed bloody murder. I asked Chris if he could go to him next time since he was so keen on latching on, I figured maybe it would be different with Chris. So Chris went in there and within 15-20 minutes Freddy was asleep again.

At 1:30, Henry decided it was time to play “Where’s Elmo?”. He’s grown so attached to a little stuffed toy that’s about 3 inches tall and falls asleep clinging to it. As he moves throughout the night, he lets go and Elmo gets lost in the blankets or wedged between the bed and the wall. If Henry wakes up during the night and can’t find him, well he activates the alarm (a high pitched “DAAAAAADDDDYYYY!”) and we come to his room and help him find him, then all is well. So that happened at 1:30.

Afterwards, hard enough to believe, I had a really difficult time falling back asleep. I was in actual physical pain from not having nursed since 7pm. Everytime I rolled over, I felt like my boobs were lead filled bowling balls trying to rip themselves from my body. My plan had been to hold out until 5am or so to feed Freddy but when he woke up at 3, I couldn’t take anymore and I fed him. I was betrayed by my own body. He went back down again until around 6am.

Last night, Day 3, again he woke up at 11:30pm. I went to him, he tried to latch on again to my shoulder, ear, cheek. I put him back down and he shrieked in anger. I’m thinking picking him up might not be the best thing to do. I left the room and decided I would go back in 10 minutes. He was screaming and screaming and I almost gave in and went to him and all of a sudden he just stopped. Like from screaming bloody murder to deathly silence. I listened for 2-3 minutes and nothing. Then I started thinking “what if he suffocated? What if Atticus went and sat on his face?” so I got up and snuck in his room and he was peacefully sleeping.

Henry played another round of Where’s Elmo around 2am but it was a quick game and he was back asleep within minutes.

Freddy woke up again at 3am and I debated letting him cry it out again but I know now that Henry is in light sleep around this time and didn’t want him to wake up for good so I nursed Freddy again. And I’ll admit, I was in a bit of pain again so it helped relieve some of that as well.

Henry then decided to wake up at 4:30 and Chris went to him and put him back down. He then left Henry’s door open when he left his room so at 5am we had Henry come and join us. He climbed into bed between both of us, I got him some milk, he drank it then fell asleep between both of us. It was kind of nice. Freddy decided to join our little party at 6am but he then became that guy who ruined the whole vibe of the party by doing his loud babbling and refusing to fall back asleep. So I got up with him and brought him to Henry’s room in hopes of getting him to quiet down. I got him so close to falling back asleep but then Henry came in looking for me and climbed into his bed and Freddy got all hyper again and decided to be up for good.

So I’m not sure where that leaves us. I think we’re doing better but I also feel we’re doing worse with Henry who seems to be waking up more often and more early. I know partially the problem for last night was that Henry went to bed later than usual and that always ends up with a crappy night for him.  I think we’re going to have to be stricter with his bed time as well and bring it back down to 7-7:30.

Now if only I could find a way for Freddy to sleep in a bit more. He likes waking up around 5:30-6:00 but then within an hour he wants to go back to sleep. Why can’t he just sleep that extra hour right away?

I just wish sometimes you could rationalize with kids and explain to them how much they will wish they had slept more as kids when they are adults.

I love Freddy's face here. Like he's thinking "seriously dude, you're straddling my head? Come on!" Also side note: Henry's skeleton pjs glow in the dark. The first few times he's worn them, it was a bit of a shock going to him in the dark and seeing pretty much just the outline of a skeleton

Honestly, the reason he was crying, I asked him if I could take his picture to send to my mom who had requested a recent pic. He said yes, then when I started taking the picture, he got mad at me.

Sleep Training Chronicles: Day 1 September 13, 2013

Filed under: Uncategorized — frombeantosprout @ 9:27 am

Yesterday I went to the movies with my friend Aline and she told me “There’s always a reason to not start sleep training”. That resonated super deeply with me. I knew I had to start soon with Freddy but I kept putting it off. My biggest concern was waking up Henry, then I had “well it’s a weeknight” and then “well tomorrow is saturday and everyone’s had a rough week so it’s a bad time to start”. Anyways after talking about it with Aline yesterday, I decided, this is it, we’re doing this.

With Henry we waited too long to sleep train. He was over 8 months old and just incredibly set in his ways. It’s almost like we had to break him and build him back up again. It was rough and I had hoped beyond all hope that Freddy would be different. I think deep down I kept thinking if I put off sleep training, he would miraculously just at some point soon start sleeping through the night. I know it was naive to think this, but a girl can hope right?

First thing I did, I decided to start Freddy’s bed time routine earlier when he showed signs of fatigue. This meant at 6pm we were making our way upstairs. I also decided that the entire routine was going to happen in his room, which meant no more lengthy lying down nursing sessions. I was sitting in our Poang chair and feeding him until he was drowsy and put him down at 6:30. He slept until 7pm and then woke up crying. I decided to modify the cry it out method in that I’ll pick him up and comfort him and then put him back down. He cried for about 30 minutes total with me picking him up at various intervals and then fell asleep again. I thought to myself “Well this couldn’t have gone better”.

I had decided that I wasn’t going to force him to go without nursing for the entire night, that I would feed him once. So when he woke up at 11, I fed him and put him back down.

At 1:30 he started waking up again and I braced myself thinking “ok, this is it, this is where you commit to this”. He groaned and moaned for about 10 minutes and that was it, he was back asleep. I was so happy. I was high fiving myself in bed, mentally writing out a blog post in my mind about how easy it had been. Then 2:30 rolled around and the real party started. Freddy just couldn’t relax. He would cry for 5 minute intervals, then stop for a minute then start again. I had told myself I wanted at least 5 hours between feedings meaning I was going to stubbornly wait it out until 4 am. Well Freddy won, at 4am on the dot, I was giving him milk. But the party didn’t stop there. Once he had fed, he was wide awake and wanted to play. I thought he’d pass out of sheer exhaustion from having cried for 90 minutes but nope, it was time to play. I closed my light and hoped he would fall asleep but he kept playing so I brought him back to his room and left him in his crib. I could hear him kicking the railings like a prisoner trying to get the warden’s attention. At 4:30 he started crying again and I asked Chris if he could go to him since I was spent. Chris went to him and noticed he had a dirty diaper. I guess I was so tired I didn’t notice. I wonder if we could have avoided a large part of last night if I had checked his diaper first. I then fed him again and he passed out until almost 7.

Unfortunately, Henry didn’t appreciate being left out of the festivities so he woke up sometime between 4:30 and 5:00. Chris went to get him and started getting ready for work while I passed out. I think at one point Henry was poking me trying to get me to wake up but I honestly don’t remember. I was out cold. I think I may have been snoring as well.

All to say, day 1 didn’t go exactly as planned. I’m hoping tonight will be better. I just wanted him to realize he can go more than 90 minutes without nursing.

I forgot how hard this whole thing is.

Henry's spent the morning in a daze just strumming the ukelele.. I think he'll perform something for us tonight around midnight.

Comparison Shot September 10, 2013

Filed under: Uncategorized — frombeantosprout @ 9:17 am

A lot of people tell me that Henry and Freddy look a lot like each other. I sometimes have a harder time seeing it. Henry’s my little fair haired boy and Freddy is my darker one. I decided to do a comparison shot of them, at roughly the same age and now I feel like they look even less like each other. Maybe I should try and recreate similar pics to then compare.

It's funny, Henry looks bigger here but Freddy is actually the bigger baby.

I then decided to look at a comparison shot of Henry and I. I look more sleep deprived now.
